Markets and Client Base
With over 300 successful projects, Safeguards Technology’s systems are installed in critical facilities worldwide, including correctional institutions, Department of Defense sites, US Army bases, US Navy bases, US Navy Bases, Nuclear Power Plants, Civilian and Military airports. We operate within the security frameworks set by the Department of Homeland Security.
Energy and Nuclear Security
Nuclear facilities face a variety of threats, ranging from sabotage to direct attacks. Safeguards Technology specializes in a security strategy known as "defense-in-depth," and we have successfully completed over 45 projects within this sector across the U.S. and Canada.
Following the 2001 terrorist attacks, Safeguards Technology designed security barriers meeting NRC’s Design Basis Threat standards. These systems use vibration sensors, fiber optics, and anti-climb fencing, successfully passing NRC force-on-force evaluations.
Furthermore, in 2004 Safeguard’s team on engineers worked closely with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to design a 40 second delay configuration which was then defined as the NRC standard for all nuclear facilities within the United States.
Those attempting to attack a nuclear reactor or facility have several options at their disposal. They might target shipments of fuel or waste, attempt an invasion using armed force or deception, steal radioactive materials, or even destroy the facility—whether through an explosion or by causing a reactor meltdown. Some may try to breach containment using truck bombs, missiles, or hijacked aircraft. Given the dangerous potential of these threats, it’s critical that all facilities housing significant amounts of radioactive material are protected by a comprehensive and layered defense system.
Security for reactors and waste-storage facilities is based on the "defense-in-depth" principle. This approach involves surrounding the facility with multiple concentric layers of security. The outermost barrier consists of fencing and razor wire, strategically designed to delay and trap intruders. Intrusion detection sensors monitor the grounds both inside and outside the fence. Access points are strictly controlled, with vehicles only allowed entry through checkpoints manned by armed guards. Pedestrian and vehicle access is tightly regulated to prevent unauthorized entry.
Corrections
In today’s environment of growing inmate populations, it is more critical than ever for each correctional facility to select and maintain the most effective and tailored integrated security solution. Every facility has unique needs and circumstances that must be addressed to ensure it receives the advanced security it requires. Our commitment to security is reflected in our dedication to flawless design, engineering, and installation of integrated security systems, all aimed at providing the highest level of protection for our clients.
For over 40 years, Safeguards Technology has delivered cutting-edge security solutions to more than 160 correctional facilities across Federal, State, and Municipal levels. Our solutions have ranged from turnkey installations, where we strategically incorporate the core principles of “deter, detect, and delay,” to employing the latest intrusion detection technologies and physical delay systems to ensure comprehensive, state-of-the-art security.
Transportation
As security threats to critical airport infrastructure continue to evolve, airport authorities are allocating increased budgets to safeguard these vital assets. A proactive strategy is being implemented, focusing on the installation of integrated security solutions that are not only capable of addressing current threats but are also designed to be compatible with emerging technologies, as well as legacy security systems.
Similarly, railway, mass transit, and trucking facilities face unique vulnerabilities that make them potential targets for attacks. From protective barrier solutions like bollards and fencing to advanced video analytics and access control systems, Safeguards Technology offers integrated security solutions tailored to safeguard your assets and operations.
Seaports, as essential gateways for global commerce, are equally critical to national economic security. Handling over 80 percent of world trade by volume, maritime vessels are key transporters of goods and are also prime targets for smuggling, weapon infiltration, and direct attacks on port facilities. Safeguards Technology provides comprehensive security solutions designed to address these threats, ensuring the protection of vessels, containers, cargo, and commercial vehicles from a range of risks.
Department of Defense
Military facilities worldwide represent significant targets for both strategic and political gains by adversaries. Even minimal damage to U.S. military assets can be seen as a victory in certain parts of the world. Given this reality, it is imperative that military assets are protected by robust physical barriers that deter hostile actions. Relying on large numbers of personnel for defense is not a sustainable long-term solution. Instead, technology offers a more efficient and cost-effective means of safeguarding these critical assets.
An integrated security solution for military facilities should continue to adhere to the principles of defense-in-depth (as discussed in relation to nuclear security). This approach employs concentric security barriers and buffer zones, which not only help detect breaches but also delay attacks, providing valuable time for a well-equipped response team to neutralize the threat. The most effective intrusion detection systems combine multiple, redundant technologies to enhance the likelihood of early detection, ensuring reliable protection across a wide range of conditions.
Safeguards Technology has successfully completed projects worldwide for the Department of Defense, US Army, US Navy, US Air Force and US Customs and border protection.
Homeland Security
To provide a more facility-specific breakdown of Safeguards Technology’s customer base, we’ve aligned it with the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP) and the Critical Infrastructure/Key Resources Sectors identified under HSPD-7. In today’s rapidly evolving security landscape, the DHS has taken on the responsibility of protecting our nation’s critical resources and has been granted the authority to establish standards and protocols for security measures at each facility. Since the establishment of the DHS, Safeguards Technology has been working diligently to adhere to these new "rules of engagement" and ensure our solutions are fully compliant with the latest security requirements.
Critical Infrastructure Protection
The terrorism protection capabilities of data centers, financial institutions, pharmaceutical facilities, and to a lesser extent, museums and historical sites, are undergoing significant and much-needed upgrades. Once viewed as "soft targets" by extremists, these facilities are integral to our society’s function and cultural heritage. Their destruction or damage would not only cause widespread disruption but also serve as a major symbolic victory for extremist groups. Vulnerability assessments for these types of facilities consistently recommend an integrated security solution based on the defense-in-depth philosophy. This approach employs concentric security barriers and buffer zones that enhance breach detection and delay attacks, providing crucial time for a well-equipped response team to neutralize the threat.
Borders
In 2013, Safeguards Technology was awarded the contract to secure 220 kilometers of the border between Israel and Egypt. Border protection plays a crucial role in preventing illegal crossings and the smuggling of harmful or illicit materials between nations. An integrated border security solution is essential for maintaining stability and peace, particularly in regions with complex diplomatic relations, whether the neighboring countries are allies or have more sensitive interactions.
